To check whether a given pair is a solution of the linear equation

Concept Explanation

To check whether a given pair is a solution of the linear equation

Following steps are to be followed to check whether a given pair is a solution of linear equation or not :

  • This is done by substituting the value for the variables in the given equation.
  • Solve the Left Hand Side (L.H.S)
  • Solve the Right Hand Side (R.H.S)
  • If L.H.S = R.H.S, then the pair is a solution of the given equation
  • Illustration: Check whether (3,4) is a solution of the equation 3x - 5y = 6

Solution: Substituting the value in the Left Hand Side of equation

    Left Hand Side (L.H.S.) = 3(3) - 5(4)   = 9 - 20    = -11

    Right Hand Side (R.H.S) = 6

    large As; L.H.S neq R.H.S

Illustration: Check whether (-3,-2) is a solution of the equation 3x-5y;=1

    Solution: Left Hand Side (L.H.S.)

    =3left ( -3 right )-5left ( -2 right ) =-9+10=1

    Right Hand Side (R.H.S) =1

    large As; L.H.S = R.H.S

So (-3,-2) is a solution of the equation.
